Venable asked STUDIOS to develop a design concept for their Washington, D.C. office. The 100-year-old law firm wanted an efficient design with a clean, modern aesthetic that would promote stability and professionalism.

The project called for the integration of new construction with the historic renovation of the landmark Hecht Department Store buildings. A series of ramp and stair connections were created to compensate for disparate floorplate alignments between the new and the historic structures, establishing a more cohesive office atmosphere.

Public spaces such as reception and lobby areas share common design elements, including floating Venetian plaster panels that frame enormous stainless steel pendant lighting fixtures. A ceremonial stair connects a training center to the street level reception. Attorney practice areas are located on the upper levels. The top floor of building opens out onto a rooftop terrace with an outdoor dining area and a bocce ball court, encouraging relaxation and social interaction among employees.
