Harbor Group International approached STUDIOS to help re-imagine the lobby, security, and entry sequence of 4 New York Plaza. The 22-story brick building was built in the late 1960s with a dark brick and bronze palette that permeates the space. With a series of selective alterations, STUDIOS created a new impression for the building through strategic additions and interior finishes. The simple addition of white gallery walls, a sculptural desk, and newsstand kiosk brighten and animate the space, while relocating the security turnstiles eases the flow toward elevator lobbies.

The design team sought to introduce monumental program elements into the space to contrast with the darkness and solidity of the lobby’s brick walls and floor pavers while also taking advantage of the generous scale of the lobby. The existing plastic laminate reception desk and original bronze elevator control station were reimagined as a new sculptural reception desk of thermoformed, white Corian. A newsstand kiosk, approximately 30’ L x 25’ W x 12’ H, was introduced into the lobby, activating the space and providing integral incidental seating and building identity in its fluid form. The Corian forms are seamlessly fabricated, with intermittent reveals designed to enhance the scale and form of the elements.
