STUDIOS worked with 3Com Corporation to incrementally expand the high-tech company’s corporate headquarters over twelve years of development. Located amid a nondescript industrial development alongside a busy highway, the campus had with limited access to dining facilities and other amenities. It was vital to create a pleasant work environment that would provide necessary services to employees, as well as help to attract talented new staff.
STUDIOS developed a campus master plan evocative of a small village or college campus, with buildings connected by a series of courtyards that serve as the heart of the headquarters. With each phase of construction, the architectural design became increasingly dynamic and the campus assumed greater density. A reflecting pool softens the relatively urban landscape and doubles as a secondary water supply for the new manufacturing building. A 300-foot long pedestrian bridge connects the two halves of the campus. In the final phase, a podium parking structure was masked by a ring of surrounding buildings, and topped with a landscaped courtyard.
The campus houses offices, research and development, manufacturing and a network operations center, and amenities such as a fitness center, three dining facilities of up to 120 seats each, a customer-briefing center, a training facility, as well as podium and freestanding parking structures.
