Canstruction® is an extraordinary annual design competition and the most unique food charity in the world. STUDIOS NY is among 24 firms who have spent months planning their entries and were allowed only one adrenaline-filled night (January 31st) to meticulously stack and color-coordinate their cans into ingenious feats of engineering. The massive structures, including STUDIOS' VeCAN Hammer Hunger, will be on view to the public until Feb. 11 at the World Financial Center. They will then be dismantled and donated to City Harvest to help feed hungry New Yorkers and people still recovering from Sandy.

STUDIOS celebrated the grand opening of Canal Park on Friday, November 16, 2012. The park brings much needed green space, as well as an ice skating rink, to this part of Washington, DC, while also pushing the sustainability envelope as a pilot project for the Sustainable Sites Initiative.Read more about the grand opening in the Washington Post and see video here.

New York's City Council has overwhelmingly approved the plan put forth by Jamestown Properties and STUDIOS to expand the Chelsea Market building. The 290,000-square-foot addition will include office space, allowing media and tech companies already located in the neighborhood to expand and grow. STUDIOS' design preserves the historic building's facade and 75% of its retail space. STUDIOS completed a renovation of Chelsea Market's 9th Avenue facade and entry last year. In addition, Jamestown will also invest in affordable housing units, a youth technology center, and continued work on the High Line.

As everyone at STUDIOS' New York office returns to business as usual, we are mindful of those less fortunate than ourselves. Over the weekend many of our staff volunteered throughout the area, aiding our neighbors in the initial stages of recovery. We continue to encourage colleagues and friends to support relief efforts.

STUDIOS' design for the headquarters of Armstrong Teasdale is featured in this month's Design Solutions, the magazine of the Architectural Woodwork Institute. The project's organic, wood sculptural pieces are one of the primary design elements in the space.

The renovation of UC Berkeley's California Memorial Stadium was lauded in the October 20th issue of the San Francisco Chronicle. Article written by John King.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the 915,000 sf campus took place on September 28th. The project includes a 1,000 seat-theater, 200 seat-recital hall, Shanghai Dance School for 1,500 students, as well as the Shanghai Ballet’s and Dance Troupe’s headquarters and rehearsal studios.

STUDIOS teamed with landscape architects SWA Group and structural engineers Holmes Culley for our 2012 Park(ing) Day exhibit. The structure was made primarily of recyclable cardboard repurposed from plotter paper rolls.

The American Association of Landscape Architects (ASLA) recognized the courtyard at 200 Fifth Avenue with a 2012 Honor Award. The courtyard, completed with landscape architect Landworks Studio, Inc., responds to the changing dynamics of office culture by encouraging chance encounters and offering respite from workplace stress. In addition, in 2010 the USGBC awarded the project LEED Gold — New York City’s only landmarked Core & Shell building to achieve such a high designation.

The city of Val-de-Reuil is getting a facelift, thanks to a new town hall. A tour of the new municipal technical facility, designed by STUDIOS, was held on August 28 in the presence of the prefect of the Haute-Normadie, Pierre de Bousquet, and the prefect of the Eure, Dominique Sorain. Organized around a series of key events, the day began with a tour of the Municipal Technical Center by Jim Cowey, principal and lead architect of the project.

A one-of-a-kind mini-golf course designed by some of the region’s top architects, construction firms, urban planners, and designers opens at the National Building Museum. Tee off on July 4 and make sure to play STUDIOS' hole, inspired by our design for Canal Park.

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) broke ground last week on its new headquarters in Mount Vernon Triangle, bordered by New York Avenue and 6th, 7th, and K Streets, NW. The base building is designed by Shalom Baranes Associates. The interiors, by STUDIOS, will feature an open-space floor plan designed to foster an environment of communication and collaboration. The AAMC will move into the new building in early 2014.

STUDIOS' is currently working to redesign and upgrade the kitchen at Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the mayor of the City of New York. While current Mayor Michael Bloomberg does not reside at the mansion, this 1799 house welcomes dozens of high-profile events throughout the year. The kitchen has not been renovated since 1985 when Ed Koch was mayor.

As the glass canopies are going up on the Fondation Louis Vuitton, the project has made headlines of both Le Figaro and Le Parisien.

STUDIOS is pleased to announce that Marnique Heath, AIA, Nathan Minch, AIA, and Brian Pilot, AIA have each been promoted to Principal. Marnique, who has been with the firm for 13 years, leads buildings, interiors, and sustainable design projects for some of the area's largest law firms, financial companies, and associations/non-profits. Nathan, a member of the DC office since 2000, has built a reputation for highly technical building projects and is leading several complex renovations on the East Coast. Brian joined the firm in 1999 and is currently leading the design of several large-scale, innovative buildings for STUDIOS' mixed-use and civic + institutional clients.

Marnique Heath, Associate Principal and Managing Director of STUDIOS' Washington, DC office will be speaking at the AIA National Convention on May 19. Along with D. Graham Davidson, FAIA, Thomas Huck, PE, and Thomas Krajewski, PE, DBIA, she'll be discussing "Working at the Intersection of Process, People, and Technology: Using IPD and BIM in the Design of Historic D.C. Projects." Attendees will learn how to develop and use a BIM execution plan to help the entire team streamline the design and construction process.

STUDIOS' 300 Santana Row and Kiva projects featured in the design issue of the new regional real estate magazine The Q.

The AIA named the UC Merced campus as one of their 2012 Top 10 Green Projects. STUDIOS designed the fourth academic building on the campus, the Social Sciences and Management Building, which is seeking LEED Gold.

In a competition organized by the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership and the Pratt Design Incubator, local community members, artists, and designers, including Sarah Poist and James Petras (Designers in our New York office) submitted winning designs for new tree guards and benches. The 20 winning designs were fabricated and installed on Myrtle Avenue.

STUDIOS recently completed the design and construction of new offices for Fred Alger Management, a global leader in investment management. On April 9, Alger held a ceremony to dedicate their new office in memoriam of their 35 colleagues and friends lost during 9/11. The University of Cincinnati's CARE/Crawley Building and the Inverness Residence were recently featured on the covers of two new publications: "Environmental Issues for Architecture" and "Atlas of Ecological Architecture" (published in France).

The Montgomery County Planning Board approved the plan for North Bethesda Market II, a new retail, office, and residential development designed by STUDIOS in White Flint, an area undergoing dramatic change as landowners begin to capitalize on planners’ urban vision for the area.

The STUDIOS team won the Judges' Choice Award in the 2011-2012 IIDA Northern California Chapter's The Windows program, which creates temporary design installations within empty storefronts. Our design team included STUDIOS, BCCI, Steelcase, One Workplace, Design Tex, and Coalesse. This year's program raised funds for Raphael House, a temporary home for families in crisis.

Staff from STUDIOS' NY office volunteered this weekend for Publicolor, a non-profit organization that aims to improve education by promoting an imaginative use of color in school buildings. Architects from across North and South America gathered at The Savoy Hotel in London on December 12th for the announcement of the winners of the Americas Property Awards in association with Bloomberg Television and Google. STUDIOS' 200 Fifth Avenue was awarded a Commendation for Office Architecture.

Google inaugurated their new Paris offices Tuesday morning in a kick-off celebration that included French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Google’s Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt. The most unique feature of the new Google facilities will be the Cultural Institute. Studios’ design plays on iconic themes relating to both French and European culture, mixing culture and technology, tradition and modernity, all with the usual dose of Google fun.

North Bethesda Market II, a mixed-use project developed by JBG Cos. and designed by STUDIOS, was recently featured in The Washington Post.

STUDIOS participated in the 15th Annual We Care holiday event, benefiting the Boys and Girls Clubs of San Francisco. The event provides kids with the opportunity to create unique arts & crafts gifts, and to work one-on-one with volunteers to learn about the creative process as they navigate multiple activity stations. This year, STUDIOS volunteers worked with the kids to make fleece hats, complete with kid-customized tassels.

Starting December 6, the Museum of the City of New York will be celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Commissioners’ Plan of 1811 with their exhibit "The Greatest Grid: The Master Plan of Manhattan, 1811-2011." Featuring an original 1811 hand-drawn map of New York's planned streets and avenues, as well as other rare historic maps, photographs, and prints, the exhibition examines the grid’s design, implementation, and evolution. STUDIOS is proud to sponsor this exhibit and to support MCNY.

STUDIOS Paris participated in Bouygues Immobilier’s Annual Innovation Forum, "FIBI," on the 5th and 6th October 2011, which took place at the historic site of Fort Issy-les-Moulineaux. Recognized for its expertise in interior design and workplace consulting, STUDIOS assisted Bouygues Immobilier in analysing market trends and defining workplace standards of the future. This research contributed to Bouygues Immobilier’s definition of new office concepts, and STUDIOS designed one exhibition area of the forum to illustrate these trends.

Over the weekend of November 4th, 5th and 6th, STUDIOS employees volunteered their time to help paint, install furnishings, decorative elements and plants, hang doors, and do a lot of clean up for Kiva's new office location, which STUDIOS designed as part of our pro-bono efforts.Kiva is a non-profit organization that provides microfinancing to small businesses and individuals across the globe with a greater goal of alleviating poverty.

STUDIOS is leading the design of the upcoming North Bethesda Market II, which combines a 26-story, 300-foot-tall residential tower with an office building, a theater, restaurant, retail space, as well as a public plaza, on a 4.4-acre site.

Marimekko, the Finnish fashion and lifestyle brand, recently established its own flagship store in the former at 200 Fifth Avenue in the Flatiron neighborhood of Manhattan.STUDIOS, completed renovations at 200 Fifth in 2010, and acted as Architect of Record to Japanese architectural firm IMA, in cooperation with Marimekko’s internal design team.

The 2011 IIDA MAC Designer Charity Event, Cosmo Couture, was held October 12th at the Artisphere in Rosslyn, Virginia. This fall’s event was a juried competition and charity benefit in which local design firms partner with industry manufacturers creating a high-fashion garment. Each firm toured DC and snapped a photograph of something DC related and used that image to inspire the design of their garment. The competition benefitted My Sister’s Place, Inc., the largest and oldest non-profit agency serving battered women and their children in the District of Columbia. At the full runway show, STUDIOS' garment won the Audience Favorite Award! More importantly the designs raised thousands of dollars for a great cause. Congrats to the STUDIOS DC design team on their fabulous garment!

STUDIOS teamed with GCI, Pivot and Tandus in the 28th Annual Leap Sandcastle Contest, which is a fundraiser for arts programs in 27 Bay Area schools.

Last night was the opening event of the Marimekko Flagship Store. STUDIOS was the Architect of the Record for the store. Highlights included:· Plenty of Finlandia· Bjork-like dance choreography with Marimekko Fabrics.· Employees sewing bags out of the vibrantly colored barricade vinyl.· All the servers had some connection to Finland The space looks great especially with what seemed like 200 people!

STUDIOS joined with Holmes Culley and Chris Chalmers to celebrate PARK(ing) Day, an annual worldwide event started to draw attention to how much space is taken for parking in our cities. The team built this inhabitable sculpture / installation at 1st and Howard out of rolls of large format printer paper tubes.

Marimekko is a Finnish textile and fashion design company founded in the 1950s. There are several retail outlets within Crate & Barrel stores, but this is their first stand-alone store in the US, soft opening was October 1 and the grand opening is October 5th. The design was a collaborative effort with Japanese architects IMA. StructureTone is the general contractor with Scanga producing millwork fixtures, Labrador Technology installing IT/Security, and Charlie Morrow Productions installing a “3D Audio” system that promises to create an extremely unique sensory experience.

STUDIOS' design for Armstrong Teasdale's 150,000-square-foot St. Louis headquarters was recently awarded the 2011 Distinguished Design Award for Interiors from the St. Louis chapter of the AIA. Congrats to the entire project team!

In 2007, NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg released PlaNYC, a bold agenda of initiatives to create a greener, greater New York over the next 20 years. This month, the City released an update to PlaNYC that builds upon the progress and lessons of the past four years. Designed by STUDIOS, the full 200-page report is also available online.

The University of Texas System Board of Regents recently approved STUDIOS’ design for the new Arts and Technology Education Center at the University of Texas at Dallas. The program includes instructional spaces and design studios, exhibition space, faculty and graduate offices, as well as a 1,200-seat auditorium. The building will also serve as the new home for the School of Visual Arts. The design concept evokes a portal, creating a gateway to the campus while expressing the convergence of art and technology. STUDIOS is the Design Architect on the project, working in close collaboration with Architect of Record VAI Architects. The $60 million building is slated for completion in 2013.

Members of STUDIOS' USO design team, along with the USO and members of the military held a groundbreaking ceremony on June 27 for the new USO Wounded Warrior and Family Center at Fort Belvoir. The innovative building will feature spaces that reflect the specific needs of Wounded Warriors and their loved ones, such as family friendly rooms, classrooms, movie theaters, and healing gardens. From the natural materials used in construction to the lighting, flooring, furniture and climate, the entire design focuses on the healing of body, mind, and spirit.
